Today my friend (and hair stylist extraordinaire), Stacey, gave Roman his very first haircut. I am not going to lie, I was a bit sad to take him to get his hair cut. Most moms don't have to have their kids' hair cut until the kids are about two years old (or even older), but I guess that when your kid is born with a full head of hair that doesn't fall out this is what you have to do. I agreed with Marc that it was time to do it, but I knew I would miss his shaggy curls. He's just growing up too fast. Anyhoo, we headed for Stacey's this afternoon, and they had a little pre-cut bonding time playing with Stacey's little dog Izzy, and then the cut began. Stacey's husband, Mike, was nice enough to take some pre- and during-cut pictures, so thanks Mike! I thought that things weren't going to go very smoothly when Rome refused to put the hair-cape on, but he actually did a really good job. He did pull away and/or try to grab the comb (or scissors) away from Stacey a few times, but he eventually calmed down and let Stacey finish up. And I am super happy with the results. I still wanted his hair to be a little shaggy, but I didn't want him to be able to wrap his fingers in his hair anymore... Wait. I should tell that story.
The other morning Roman woke up with what looked like the beginnings of dreadlocks in a couple of spots in his hair. I had no idea what had caused them, but they were such a pain to comb out. His hair was twisted up so tight that I thought I was going to have to cut sections out of his hair. I was finally able to get the knots out, but it took forever, and Roman was less than thrilled with me yanking and combing his hair. It wasn't until I gave him a bottle that afternoon that I realized what was causing this: he was twirling his hair around his finger. I only really noticed that he was doing it because he managed to get his right index finger caught in his hair, and he freaked. Yet another sign that now was the time to cut his hair.
So, back to the haircut, I also wanted to make sure that his bangs stayed out of his eyes because he was constantly pushing the hair out of his face. And his haircut does all of these things. He still has cute hair (even if the curls are gone), but it can't cause problems anymore. So hooray!! Here are some pictures from today's mane event (Get it? Ha!! I am such a nerd... also, this is why grammar is so important, people).
Perhaps the best part of the day for Roman was that he got ice cream after dinner for being such a good boy this afternoon. Note to self: Giving ice cream to a one year old right before bed is a horrible idea. He was wired tonight and was making all kinds of super funny sounds before he finally fell asleep. And I should note that we had to change him before he finally went to sleep, and it took Marc and I working together to keep Rome on the changing table and get his diaper changed without him rolling off or making a huge mess. Rome was beyond spastic, and it was kind of funny, but also incredibly frustrating. I just had to take pictures of him while he was eating the ice cream though, because he was so excited he was practically jumping out of his highchair to get it. He always makes this crazy smiley face when he gets that excited... it sort of looks like he's having a stroke or something. It's very odd and very funny. All in all, today was a very good day.
